The inspiration for the REA emerged from the 2008-2009 Residents' Council Presidents. Further development of this award continued with the 2009-2010 Council Presidents.

The purpose of the Residence Engagement Award (REA) is to recognize the positive contributions and demonstrated leadership efforts of a first-year student within the residence community. Up to five awards across campus will be granted.

The REA provides incentive for students to return to a leadership position within the residences. Recipients are guaranteed their first choice of residence for the following academic year, will have their residence deposit covered (value of $900), and receive a certificate signed by the President of the University.

Who can apply?

Recipients of the Residence Engagement Award will meet the following criteria:

  • A full-time, first-year student living in residence in the current academic year who is in good-standing and who is returning to live in residence the following year academic year;
  • Self-motivated, inspires others, and demonstrates initiative resulting in a positive community (room, suite, floor, unit, or residence);
  • Demonstrates inclusive actions by valuing, respecting, and celebrating differences; and
  • Acts as a caring and responsible citizen of the residence community.

Award recipients are chosen based on their application and reference. Applications and references are reviewed by a selection committee comprised of student leaders and full-time Western staff members.
