Campus Life

Choose2Reuse (Eco-tainers)

By Tammy Zhang

Takeout packaging can be wasteful - it rushes directly from the restaurant to the landfill. When you grab a bite from the Dining Hall for lunch, ask for it to go.

The lifespan of a paper plate is short, but it will sit in a landfill for decades. This contributes to the massive scale of environmental damage from landfilling operations. But alas, there is a way to stop this ongoing cycle of waste.

To address unnecessary waste, Housing has put forth a great initiative called Choose2Reuse in residence Dining Halls across campus. The Choose2Reuse program offers the unlimited use of reusable food and beverage takeout containers for a $5.00 buy-in. The process is as follows:

  1. Order your food 'to-go' in a C2R container, or select a C2R travel mug for your beverage
  2. Pay a $5.00 program fee which is one-time and non-refundable (you may use your meal plan card for the buy-in), or present your existing C2R card to the cashier
  3. Enjoy your meal!
  4. Return the dirty container to the designated drop-off area (near the cash) and collect your C2R card from the cashier in the dining hall
  5. All ecotainers are washed and sanitized, so that all food will be placed in a clean C2R container
  6. Next time, order your meal 'to-go' in a C2R container, or select a C2R travel mug for your beverage, and simply present your C2R card to the cashier
  7. Repeat this process for a greener Dining Hall experience! Card for container, container for card. And so on!

This exchange processes of Choose2Reuse can be used an unlimited number of times throughout the academic year, as long as you hold on to either your "membership" card, or an eco-tainer. The sturdy little container can go a long way in reducing the amount of waste we produce in residence. So take action against unnecessary waste and Choose to Reuse!
